Arabic Sandal Culture and History

Arabic sandal culture is nothing like the typical footwear industry because each product has some historical value. There are certain norms attached to the design of Arabic sandals that distinguish the Middle Eastern footwear industry from the rest of the world.

People in Saudi Arabia like to keep their feet covered by wearing socks or wraps over their feet to protect them from dust and cold temperatures. Men often wear long robes called thobes with socks on their feet or protective footwear underneath to cover themselves from dirt while walking outdoors and many women wrap their feet in a fabric called an abaya as well as tucking it under the heel while going outside too.

History of Arabic Sandals

No sandals have been a staple in human civilization as long as the Arabic sandal. For centuries, Arabic sandals were crafted by leather masters in Egypt, Turkey, and India. Now, Posh La Vie is offering the widest range of Arabic slippers. The aim of Posh La Vid is to create the perfect blend of Arabic sandal culture and the latest footwear manufacturing protocols.

Origin of Arabic Sandals

The origins of the Arabic sandal can be traced back to 2500 BC when early Egyptian craftsmen would stitch animal skins together to form an upper. The sole was made of a plaited palm or papyrus-stem base which was then tightly bound around the shoe with strips of leather.

The first true sandal appeared around 300 BC in China. On foot and barefoot, the Chinese invented a crude type of sandal with a sole made of fiber wrapped around the foot. The next step came in 100 AD when Greek leather peddlers from Egypt offered an alternative design for this new European invention called the “Arabian Sandal” which was actually an Egyptian model that had been adapted to fit the needs of European feet.

Evolution of Arabic Sandals

By 500 AD, Arabic craftsmen perfected their needle-working skills and began to make shoes with soft leather uppers and supple cork (or other bean-shaped) soles. These are the first “Arabian Sandals” seen in Europe. They consisted of a single thin piece of leather, held in place by an elastic sole.

The early Arabians even added decorative embellishments to their shoes such as appliqué, painted beads, and perhaps even sequins and camel hair. Although this remains to be documented, it is apparent that Arabians were keen on fashioning fashionable designs for their sandals.

As time went on there were a few minor changes. The upper was made out of thinner material and the soles were made with a slightly wider base that was curved at the ends to fit firmly over the leg.
